Some fun facts about Macao

When you think of Macao, you usually think of Casinos. And yes, Macao is famous for them, but there is so much more to the city than that.

Here are some fun facts about Macao that make the place even more interesting:

  1. Macao is actually the only place in China where casino gambling is legal, which is why people call it the “Las Vegas of Asia”. Macao’s Venetian resort is actually the world’s biggest, bigger than the one in Las Vegas.
  2. Even though Macao is super small, it is one of the most densely populated places in the world.
  3. One of the coolest things about Macao is the mix of cultures you can find: colonial colored buildings, Chinese temples, Cantonese signs, and Portuguese street names.
  4. Macau was under Portuguese rule for more than 400 years before being returned to China in 1999, which explains why the city is so culturally unique.
  5. The Ruins of St. Paul are famous for being one of the biggest landmarks in Macau. The original building is from 1600, but today we only have the front façade.
  6. Macau and Hong Kong are connected through the Hong Kong–Zhuhai–Macau Bridge, which is the longest sea bridge in the world!
  7. Macanese cuisine is a mix of Portuguese, Chinese, Southeast Asian, and African influences. It is one of the oldest fusion cuisines in the world!
  8. The name “Macau” actually comes from the A-Ma Temple. Portuguese sailors heard locals calling the area “Maa Gok,” which eventually became “Macau”.
  9. A very Macao thing is hearing multiple languages in one conversation: Cantonese, English, Mandarin, and Portuguese words all get mixed together naturally.

As you can see, we have many little things that make Macao unique. From the mix of cultures and languages to the food and history. It’s the kind of place that’s difficult to explain unless you’ve experienced it yourself.
