Cantonese weather phrases
The weather is probably one of the easiest ways to start a conversation in Cantonese. It doesn’t matter if it’s raining unexpectedly, feeling way too humid outside, or just freezing because of the air conditioning; people talk constantly about it. That’s why learning a few weather expressions can actually be super useful in daily conversations.
We have some basic words that are good to know:
- 曬(saai3) Sunny
- 陰天、多雲 (jam1tin1, do1wan4) Overcast, Cloudy
- 落雨 (lok6jyu5) Raining
- 大風 (daai6fung1) Windy
- 熱 (jit6) Hot
- 凍 (dung3) Cold
- 潮濕 (dung3) Humid
And of course, here are some phrases you’ll hear often:
- 好熱啊! 又曬。 (hou2jit6 aa3! jau6 saai3): It's so hot! And it’s sunny.
- 今日好凍。(gam1 jat6 hou2 dung3): It's very cold today.
- 落雨啊,記得帶遮!(lok6 jyu5 aa3, gei3 dak1 daai3 ze1): It's raining. Remember to bring an umbrella!
- 出面好大風,小心啲。(ceot1min2 hou2daai6fung1, siu2sam1 di1.): It's windy outside, be careful.
- 冷氣太凍喇!(laang5hei3 taai3dung3 laa3): The air conditioner is too cold!
One of our favorite expressions is 熱到飛起 (jit6 dou3 fei1 hei2), meaning “It’s freaking hot.” We know… it sounds dramatic. But honestly, sometimes the weather really feels like that!
These kinds of expressions are fun because they make Cantonese feel very alive and expressive, even in simple everyday conversations.
